The simple squamous epithelium consists of cells that are thinly walled with a dense nucleus. The position of the nucleus depends on the form of the cells where the nucleus is mostly randomly oriented towards the periphery. The cells appear like scales that provide a smooth low-friction surface over which fluids can move quickly.
The thin part of the loop of Henle is lined by simple squamous epithelium. The thin limb is divided into two parts: the ascending and descending limbs. The descending limb is highly permeable to water, but not to salt. Permeability is largely dependent on the concentration of Aquaporin 1 in the epithelium.
The squamous epithelium is composed of four layers1: 1. The basal layer is a generative layer with minimal cell turnover, attached to the basement membrane. 2. Above this is the suprabasal layer with larger round cells containing desmosomes.
Simple Squamous Epithelium. Simple squamous epithelia are found lining the cavities of the body including the pericardial, pleural, and peritoneal cavities, or in areas where passive diffusion occurs, such as glomeruli in the kidney and alveoli in the respiratory tract.
