Wesak day - Wesak Day in Malaysia





The name Vesak comes from the Sanskrit word Vaisakha, which is the name of the lunar month falling between April and May on the Gregorian calendar.

This is a public holiday in those areas, and as such, the general population has the day off.



The exhausting two-hour procession actually begins 24 hours before, when many reserve a place in the procession.





Laypeople bring flowers and offerings to the temples, where they may also meditate and listen to talks.

It is also expected that they refrain from killing of any kind therefore, they are encouraged to eat vegetarian food for the day.







Buddhism is practiced by around 500 million people across the globe, in dozens of countries.





People approach the altar reverently, fill a ladle with water or tea, and pour it over the figure to "wash" the baby.
