The Namib Desert is a coastal desert in Namibia and southwestern Angola that encompasses the world's highest sand dunes, gravel plains, and rugged mountains. It stretches some 1,200 miles (1,900 km) along the Atlantic coast of Namibia, which is named after this desert. The name Namib is from a word in the Nama language that means immense.

The Namib Desert experiences around 180 days of fog every year. This is thanks to cold air from the offshore Benguela Current crashing up against the hot air from arid inland. The Skeleton Coast No one knows how many ships foundered along Namibia’s arid shore. The ocean and constantly moving sand dunes have conspired to make many of them disappear.

Namib means vast in the Nama language. Existing for at least 55 million years, the Namib is one of the oldest deserts in the world. Some of the world's tallest sand dunes (over 300m) are found in the Namib Desert. Temperatures can reach as high as 60°C during the day and below 0°C at night; some areas receive less than 10mm of rain each year.

According to some studies, the Namib has been dry for at least 55 million years, and possibly as many as 80 million. For comparison, Sahara has been around for only 12,000 years. With that in mind, Namib is certainly the oldest desert in the world. Parts of the desert are among the driest places on Earth, with just 2mm/0.08in of rain a year.
