When it occurs together with joint effusions, joint pains, and abnormal skin and bone growth it is known as hypertrophic osteoarthropathy.
Clubbing of the nails is soft tissue swelling of the terminal phalanx resulting in flattening of the angle that exists between the nail bed and the nail. Clubbing typically occurs in combination with other dermatologic and skeletal findings but can also less commonly occur in isolation.
Clubbed nails were described in ancient times by Hippocrates and is a clinical sign that may accompany a number of different disease processes. Clubbing refers to swelling in the tip of the digit that results in loss of the normal angle seen between the nail and the nail bed. The fingertips appear broader and rounder when clubbing is present.
Nail clubbing is sometimes the result of low oxygen in the blood and could be a sign of various types of lung disease.
