Description: Incidence and mortality of nasopharyngeal carcinoma: interim analysis of a cluster randomized controlled screening trial PRO-NPC-001 in southern China.
Nasopharyngeal cancer is a type of head and neck cancer. It starts in the nasopharynx, the upper part of the throat behind the nose and near the base of skull. Cancer starts when cells begin to grow out of control. Cells in nearly any part of the body can become cancer, and can spread to other areas.
In the United States, nasopharyngeal cancer is extremely rare. Less than 1 out of 100,000 people are diagnosed with this condition every year. Nasopharyngeal cancer occurs more often in certain parts of the world, including Asia, North Africa and the Middle East. The condition can develop at any age and can even affect children.
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (also known as NPC) is a rare tumor of the head and neck which originates in the nasopharynx. The nasopharynx is located at the very back of the nose near the Eustachian tubes (Figure). Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is more common in Southeast Asia and is frequently, but not always, caused by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV).
